In the wake of Carlos Mendoza’s firing, the New York Mets already appear to have a managerial candidate ready and waiting.

According to SNY’s John Harper , legendary slugger Albert Pujols has let friends know in recent weeks that he would “very much want” the Mets’ managerial job if the team moved on from Mendoza. Harper added that Pujols has a strong relationship with Mets superstar Juan Soto, whom he managed on the Dominican Republic team during this year’s World Baseball Classic.

Pujols, 46, retired from playing at the end of the 2022 season, ending his career in fourth place on the all-time home run list with 703. The three-time NL MVP won two World Series titles with the St. Louis Cardinals, earned two Gold Glove Awards at first base and made 11 All-Star teams over 22 big-league seasons.

Prior to the World Baseball Classic, Pujols managed Leones del Escogido to championships in both the Dominican Winter League (LIDOM) and the Caribbean Series. He now serves as the president of baseball operations for the Estrellas Orientales of LIDOM. Though the future Hall of Famer has never coached at the major league or minor league level, he did formally interview for the Los Angeles Angels’ managerial job this past offseason.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported last October that Pujols was the Angels’ top choice at the beginning of their search. However, the two sides broke off talks after differing on coaching staff, resources and compensation. Los Angeles went on to hire Kurt Suzuki, who agreed to a one-year contract.

The Mets (34-47) announced Friday that Andy Green will serve as interim manager for the remainder of the 2026 season, meaning a formal search will not take place until the fall. Pujols is one of several names New York could consider for the full-time job, though more experienced candidates like Alex Cora and Rob Thomson are also available.
