The MLB community mourned the tragic death of Brett Gardner's 14-year-old son, Miller.
On Sunday, the Yankees released a statement from Gardner and his wife, Jessica, announcing their son's passing. Miller died in his sleep on Friday morning from an undisclosed illness while vacationing with family.
"Miller was a beloved son and brother and we cannot yet comprehend our life without his infectious smile," Brett and Jessica wrote. "He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He lived life to the fullest every single day."
MLB Network host Alanna Rizzo responded to the devastating news.
"This is just incomprehensible," Rizzo wrote. "Devastated for the Gardner family. May Miller RIP."
Other media members also sent their condolences to the Gardner family.
"Heartbreaking news about Brett and Jessica Gardner's youngest son, Miller," MLB.com's Bryan Hoch said. "Our thoughts are with the Gardner family."
"Horrible, incomprehensible news," The Athletic's Britt Ghiroli said. "Words just don’t do justice to what the Gardner family is dealing with.
"My heart & prayers go out to Brett Gardner," The Athletic's Andrew Marchand said. "Unbelievably sad news."
The Yankees said in a statement that they're "filled with grief" over Miller's passing.
"Words feel insignificant and insufficient in trying to describe such an unimaginable loss," the team wrote. "It wasn't just Brett who literally grew up in this organization for more than 17 years -- so did his wife, Jessica, and their two boys, Hunter and Miller. We grieve with Brett, Jessica, Hunter, and their community of family and friends in mourning the loss of Miller, who had a spark in his eyes, an outgoing and feisty personality, and a warm and loving nature.
"Our love for the Gardner family is unconditional and absolute, and we will offer our enduring support while understanding their desire for privacy at this time. May Miller rest in peace."
