Paul Skenes possesses one of the more interesting warmup routines of any starting pitcher in Major League Baseball. One of his drills includes throwing a football, quite different than throwing his fastball over 100 miles per hour over the plate. Skenes usually performs a drop back before floating the ball into the air.
Nothing was different on Tuesday as the Pittsburgh Pirates got set to host the Houston Astros. MLB Network showcased Skenes’ routine and got footage of him throwing a football. They even took a jab at the Pittsburgh Steelers along the way, joking about their quarterback situation.
Skenes is the do-it-all man already on the diamond; may as well extend it to the football field. If Steelers general manager Omar Khan cannot close the deal on Aaron Rodgers, the next best option may already be in the city, wearing No. 30 for the Pirates.
Heard the Steelers might need a quarterback?

Skenes is probably better off sticking to baseball. He is already considered one of the game’s top pitchers despite being in the early stages of his first full season with the Pirates. The numbers from Skenes are incredible too, boasting a career ERA of 2.03 in 208.1 IP over 35 appearances.
Given his college days at LSU, you have to imagine football is quite popular around the Skenes household, though. He frequently attended massive games in Death Valley, supporting the Tigers when Jayden Daniels when the starting quarterback. Pretty special watching an eventual Heisman Trophy winner play on a weekly basis.
Even this past season, when Garrett Nussmeier was under center, Skenes was back in Baton Rouge for the Alabama matchup. ESPN’s College GameDay had him and his girlfriend, Livvy Dunne, on as guest pickers. Unsurprisingly, both backed LSU to get the win while on the desk while sitting right next to Nick Saban.
As for Rodgers and the Steelers, there is no timetable as to when a deal between those two could come together. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport gave the latest on Tuesday, saying there is still belief the quarterback winds up in Pittsburgh within the organization.
“We’re sort of, unfortunately, where we were, which is them giving him, he’s dealing with his personal stuff, his time, them hoping and believing that he is going to join them and be their quarterback, but not 100% knowing,” Rapoport said on The Pat McAfee Show. “There’s been nothing to kind of push that. Now this time next week is the Steelers’ mandatory mini camp, maybe it changes. That might be interesting, and that would be a time when it would make sense for him to go in, sign if he’s going to sign, get his playbook going for the summer. So, that’s my thought and that makes the most sense but it is Aaron Rodgers, so I would literally rule nothing out.”
