MLB players hoping for bounce-back seasons in 2017

Spring training provides an opportunity from struggling players from the previous season to start turning the page. Some hope to return to previous form while others hope to overcome injury. Here are 25 such players looking for bounce-back seasons in 2017.

Jose Bautista, RF, Blue Jays

After hitting .250-40-114 in 2015, Bautista played only 116 games last season due to injury and finished the year hitting .234-22-69. He's hoping to rebound in his age 36 season after settling for a one-year deal to return to Toronto.

Wei-Yin Chen, SP, Marlins

Chen garnered a lucrative free agent contract last offseason, only to struggle in his first year with the Marlins. He missed time to injury and had a 4.96 ERA in 22 starts when he did pitch. Now the team's ace, the Marlins desperately need Chen to pitch like the pitcher he was in Baltimore.

Pittsburgh's assumed ace made only 21 starts due to injuries last season, posting a career-worst 3.88 ERA. The Pirates need him to bounce back if they hope to get back to the playoffs.

Patrick Corbin, P, Diamondbacks

Corbin made a successful return from Tommy John surgery in 2015, but his performance regressed last season. He was eventually removed from Arizona's starting rotation and posted a 5.15 ERA for the year while struggling with his control.

Carlos Gomez, CF, Rangers

Gomez's play picked up after signing with Texas late in the year, but his full body of work was disappointing. He hit just .231-13-53 for the year and struggled defensively.

6 of 25

Dee Gordon, 2B, Marlins

No one has more to prove this season than Gordon, who was suspended for nearly half of 2016 after testing positive for PEDs. He hit only .268 after winning the NL batting title in 2015.

Sonny Gray, SP, Athletics

Gray's ERA ballooned from 2.73 in 2015 to 5.69 last season, and he missed the end of the season due to injuries. His 2017 is off to another bad start with a lat injury.

Zack Greinke, SP, Diamondbacks

Arizona came out of nowhere to sign Greinke for $206.5 million last offseason, only to see the former ace struggle. He made only 26 starts with a 4.37 ERA.

Bryce Harper, RF, Nationals

After winning the NL MVP in 2015, Harper struggled through shoulder issues last season. He hit only .243-24-86 for the season.

Matt Harvey, SP, Mets

Arm issues hindered Harvey early in the year until he was diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome. He had a 4.86 ERA in 17 starts after posting a 2.71 ERA in 2015.

Felix Hernandez, SP, Mariners

Is King Felix's reign over? His velocity has been in decline recently, and he made only 25 starts with a 3.82 ERA for the M's last season.

12 of 25

Jason Heyward, RF, Cubs

Despite his team winning the World Series, Heyward's first year in Chicago couldn't have gone much worse. He hit just .230-7-49 and was benched for much of the playoffs after signing an eight-year, $184 million contract.

13 of 25

Devin Mesoraco, C, Reds

Mesoraco has barely played over the last two seasons due to injuries. That's a shame for the Reds, as he broke out in 2014, hitting .273-25-80. He's healthy going into the 2017 season.

14 of 25

Andrew McCutchen, OF, Pirates

The ultra-consistent McCutchen had a career-worst .766 OPS last season, though he still managed 20-plus home runs for the sixth consecutive year. The Pirates have shifted him out of center field, as well.

15 of 25

Shelby Miller, SP, Diamondbacks

There were lofty expectations for Miller after Arizona gave up former No. 1 overall draft pick Dansby Swanson, Ender Inciarte and more to acquire him from Atlanta. He responded with an ERA above 6.00 and a demotion to the minors, but Miller has looked strong in spring training.

16 of 25

Mike Moustakas, 3B, Royals

After a breakout season in K.C.'s World Series campaign in 2015, Moustakas stumbled out of the gate before tearing his ACL last season. He's hoping to bounce back in his walk year.

17 of 25

Joe Panik, 2B, Giants

Panik struggled at the plate after suffering a concussion, hitting just .239 for all of 2016 after hitting above .300 in his first two seasons. He's hoping to be over the post-concussion symptoms this year.

18 of 25

Gerardo Parra, OF, Rockies

Gerardo Parra, OF, Rockies

Parra struggled after signing a three-year deal with Colorado, hitting only .253. He hit .291 in less hitter-friendly environments in 2015, so the Rockies expect a rebound despite Parra's new role as a fourth outfielder.

19 of 25

Jhonny Peralta, 3B, Cardinals

Peralta suffered a thumb injury in spring training that hindered him for most of 2016. He is shifting to third base and battling for at-bats with Jedd Gyorko this year.

20 of 25

David Price, SP, Red Sox

Price won 17 games with a league-leading 230 innings last season, but he also had a 3.99 ERA, more than a half run higher than his career norm. The follow-up season has already started on a sour note for Price, as he suffered an elbow injury in spring training.

21 of 25

James Shields, SP, White Sox

Is Shields finished? He was traded to the White Sox during last season and couldn't have pitched much worse after the trade with a 6.77 ERA in 22 starts. His velocity has declined rapidly.

22 of 25

Edinson Volquez, SP, Marlins

Volquez's ERA increased by nearly two full runs from 2015, and he led the league with 113 earned runs. Miami is still hoping it can get the version of the previous two seasons, when Volquez had a sub-4.00 ERA.

23 of 25

Michael Wacha, SP, Cardinals

Michael Wacha, SP, Cardinals
Steve Mitchell / USA Today Sports Images

Wacha is battling for a rotation spot after posting a 5.09 ERA last season. He had shoulder problems late in the 2016, and it's not the first time in Wacha's career that his shoulder has bothered him. He consistently had an ERA near 3.00 prior to 2016.

24 of 25

Ryan Zimmerman, 1B, Nationals

Ryan Zimmerman, 1B, Nationals

A career's worth of injuries has turned Zimmerman into a fraction of the player he was early in his career. He fought through injuries for the third consecutive season, hitting just .218-15-46. The Nats signed Adam Lind in the offseason, who could push Zimmerman for playing time.

25 of 25

Jordan Zimmermann, SP, Tigers

Zimmermann's velocity has been down in recent seasons, and neck problems hindered him for much of last season. He had a poor 4.87 ERA in 19 appearances on the mound.
