Major League Baseball reacted Friday after Buck Martinez announced his retirement, closing the book on a career that spanned more than four decades with the Toronto Blue Jays.
MLB shared a tribute on X, congratulating Martinez on a legendary run and recognizing his impact as a player, manager and broadcaster.
"Congratulations to Buck Martinez on a legendary career!" MLB wrote on X. "Martinez announced his retirement today from Sportsnet, where he became the voice of Blue Jays baseball.
"On top of broadcasting for Toronto, Martinez also spent the final 6 years (1981-86) of his playing career with the Blue Jays and managed Toronto in 2001 and 2002."

Martinez confirmed he is stepping away from Sportsnet after serving as the voice of Blue Jays baseball for much of the past 38 years. He first joined Toronto as a player in May 1981 and remained tied to the organization through the 2025 season. His announcement followed Toronto’s World Series run, which he called a fitting final chapter.
"It's hard to believe I came to Toronto in a trade in May of 1981, thinking that would be the end of a very good career," Martinez said. "Little did I know that I still would be associated with the Blue Jays through the 2025 season.
"What a glorious season it was. It was a joy and an honour to be involved in each and every game through Game 7 of the World Series. Only one other outcome could have topped the fantastic year."
Martinez revealed that the decision came after long conversations with his wife, Arlene.
"After the World Series, my wife Arlene and I had plenty of time to think about the past and look forward to our future," Martinez said. "After many heartfelt conversations, we both decided it was time for me to step out of the booth and enjoy the years ahead."

Martinez began his MLB career as a defense-first catcher with the Kansas City Royals and Milwaukee Brewers before joining Toronto. He played six seasons with the Blue Jays and retired after the 1986 season, finishing with more than 1,000 games played across 17 seasons.
In 1987, Martinez moved directly into broadcasting. He called Blue Jays games from 1987 to 2002 and again from 2010 to 2025.
"As to the fans specifically, I will miss the 'selfies,' the handshakes, and the welcoming smiles," Martinez said. "I will never forget any of those, nor the unwavering support and generosity, which has meant more than words can say. I look forward to continuing to root for the Blue Jays along with you, and you'll always be in my heart. My sincere appreciation to all of you."
Despite a cancer diagnosis in 2022 that forced a temporary leave, Martinez returned to the booth and maintained his presence. He has been honored by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum.
As tributes poured in, the response reflected his lasting connection to Toronto.
