MLB Rumors: Insider Sees New York Mets Parting Ways With Three Players Amid Miserable Season

The New York Mets’ front office made seismic changes to their roster during the offseason in their efforts to improve the team. Yet they never would have imagined the team to be in such a dire state over the first quarter of the 2026 campaign. The Mets already tried a few wild-card moves in the first month, hoping to spark the team out of its deep rut.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today expects the New York Mets to offload some big pieces from their roster at the trade deadline. The Mets will already begin recuperating for next season if playoff chances evaporate completely over the coming weeks. He named starting pitchers Clay Holmes and Freddy Peralta as the most valuable pieces, along with right-handed slugger Bo Bichette.

“The Mets soon may be the center of attention once they realize that this season is a lost cause, letting their rivals know they are open for business. They have three of the top trade chips in the game in starters Freddy Peralta and Clay Holmes and infielder Bo Bichette,” Nightengale wrote.

Peralta arrived on a trade deal this winter, but he will become a free agent after failing to reach an agreement on an extension. Holmes has another year on his contract, but could opt out of his deal at the end of the season. Bichette started off with a rough spell after joining the Mets on a huge deal, so both parties could choose to end the relationship prematurely.

Rivals Teams Waiting For Mets To Become Sellers

According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale, rival teams are already making plans for trade deals to pry some talent away from the New York Mets. He feels the market is waiting for the Mets to announce itself as sellers at the deadline.

“Executives and scouts believe the Mets just don’t have the personnel to turn it around, putting out lineups that look more suited to rebuilding teams than the most expensive team in baseball,” Nightengale stated.

With a total payroll of almost $335 million, the Mets are the most expensive team in MLB this year. Yet they are 15-25 for the season, with the worst record in the league and 12.5 games behind the division leaders.
