Mookie Betts Speaks Out on MLB Teams' Anti-Shohei Ohtani Strategy

There were no big surprises in the Los Angeles Dodgers' first series in the 2025 MLB postseason.

As expected by many, Mookie Betts and the reigning World Series champions took care of business in the National League Wild-Card round, needing just two games to send the Cincinnati Reds to an early vacation. The Dodgers defeated the Reds in Game 1 of the series on Tuesday, 10-5, and then again in Game 2 on Wednesday, 8-4.

It gets tougher from here for the Dodgers. Up next for Los Angeles is a best-of-five date with the Philadelphia Phillies in an NL Division Series that begins this coming Friday at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

But with a loaded roster, the Dodgers have a reason to feel confident against the Phillies -- or any team, for that matter.

The Phillies should be wary of Los Angeles' batting lineup, which features superstars Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts, who are the Dodgers' usual first and second hitters in the order, respectively.

Speaking after Wednesday's victory over Cincinnati, Betts acknowledged accepting the strategy by opposing teams that intentionally give Ohtani a free pass to first base to face him instead.

"I wouldn't let Shohei swing either, I expect the Phillies to do it, I expect the rest of the postseason for it to happen," the three-time World Series champion said in a postgame press conference following the series-clinching win over the Reds (h/t Dodgers Nation).

"I just got to be ready to do my thing," added Betts.

The Reds intentionally walked Ohtani once in the wild-card round, and the Dodgers star ended up going 3-for-9 with two home runs and four RBIs in the series. Betts was even more impressive overall at the plate, as he went 6-for-9 with three doubles and three RBIs with a walk and just a strikeout.

The Dodgers are indeed a headache to deal with for opposing pitchers, and with both Ohtani and Betts off to a great start in this postseason, it will be interesting to see what kind of approach Philadelphia's hurlers will have against those two, beginning in Game 1 of the NLDS.
