In a bizarre television moment, the New York Mets mascot Mr. Met was seen dancing on screen in a broadcast about the team’s manager getting fired. Carlos Mendoza got the boot on Friday as the Mets manager, amidst a disastrous season.
Mendoza’s final six games as manager were all losses.

It isn’t known if Mr. Met actually knew that the television reporter Steve Gelbs was talking about Mendoza getting fired. Mr. Met’s dancing probably spoke for a lot of Mets fans though, who knew it wasn’t working for Mendoza in Queens.
Mendoza lasted about half the 2026 season in New York. He was fired after his club started the campaign at 34-47. The Mets had languished in last place in the National League East for most of the season.
This campaign was do-or-die for Mendoza. His 2025 Mets team collapsed in the late summer, and ended up missing the postseason. New York fans expected a lot more, especially since the 2024 club made the NLCS.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to Carlos Mendoza for his leadership and unwavering commitment,” Mets owner Steve Cohen said in a statement, per MLB.com. “He represented this organization with integrity and dedication throughout, and I wish him and his family all the best. Our commitment to bringing our fans a championship-caliber team has not changed. There is no sugar coating it: this season has been a disappointment and our fans deserve better than what we’ve delivered.”
New York plays the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. Andy Green is the team’s interim manager. The club is now 34-48 on the year, after losing to Philadelphia on Friday in Green’s debut.
