At the MLB Winter Meetings, Braves manager Walt Weiss said he’s comfortable with Mauricio Dubon as the everyday shortstop, but the club hasn’t closed the door on upgrading the position if the right deal presents itself.
There are a few trade options that could prove intriguing, including superstar shortstop Corey Seager, with the Rangers expected to shed payroll this offseason. But as far as the free-agent market goes, the only realistic target is one of the Braves’ own: Ha-Seong Kim, who has drawn interest from several clubs, according to his agent, Scott Boras.
“Had a chance to catch up with Scott Boras this afternoon,” Braves beat reporter Grant McAuley said on Twitter/X. “He said a number of clubs have reached out about Ha-Seong Kim. Boras said Kim is in great health this time around in free agency and believes he’s the best two-way shortstop on the market — pairing defense with offense.”
Boras isn’t wrong. While Bo Bichette will command a much more lucrative contract because of his elite bat, there are real questions about his long-term future at shortstop. Ha-Seong Kim is essentially the only true starting-caliber shortstop available, which could push his market well beyond what he’s actually worth.
Kim was solid in his one-month stint with the Braves — certainly an upgrade over Orlando Arcia and Nick Allen — but he appeared in just 48 games in 2025 and graded out as a below-average offensive player and roughly league-average defensively. If he’s looking at a sizable multi-year deal, it’s difficult to imagine the Braves joining that bidding war, especially given their investment in Dubon and all their other pressing needs.
According to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers are among the clubs showing interest in Ha-Seong Kim.
