The Washington Nationals made a bit of a splash on Friday, reportedly signing outfielder Jacob Young to a four-year contract extension worth $23 million.
The deal, which runs through 2030, reportedly includes an $8 million club option for 2031. It covers Young's three arbitration years along with one free-agent year.
Young was drafted by the Nationals in 2021 and debuted in 2023. He took a big step forward offensively this year, posting career highs in several categories, including home runs, RBI and OPS.
A good defensive center fielder, Young provides speed as well, with 79 steals over his first four seasons.
If Young repeats or builds on his 2026 performance, his deal will be an absolute steal for Washington. Even if he doesn't, he should continue to be a solid player in his prime over the next few years as long as he stays healthy.
