New York Mets Dominate Cross-Town Rivals in 2-Game Set
Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Mets dominated the New York Yankees in a two-game series on Tuesday and Wednesday at Citi Field. The Mets outscored their cross-town rivals 21-9 in the series. The home team won the first game 11-9 and dominated last night by winning 12-2. Even a lengthy rain delay could not slow down what has been a red-hot Mets offense. This is the fifth time the New York Mets have scored double digit runs this month. They only did that once in the previous months.

These two ballclubs are going in opposite directions. The Mets have won 11 of their last 13 games while the Yankees are 3-9 in their last 12 games. The Mets(39-39) are a .500 team for the first time since May 7. Will the New York Mets be able to keep up their high level of play as the calendar gets ready to flip over to July?

New York Mets Season Summary

The Mets have shot up both the standings and the statistical leaderboards thanks to a resurgence over the last few weeks. New York is now 1.5 GB of the third and final National League Wild Card spot. They are eighth in batting average, fourth in home runs, and 10th in runs scored. Their offense is led by First Baseman Pete Alonso. He is 15th in the league with 15 home runs. This winning streak for the Mets has been powered by a variety of different players stepping up, not just one player doing the brunt of the work at the plate.

New York’s pitching staff has been inconsistent this season. They are 19th in ERA, 11th in strikeouts, and eighth in opposing batting average. Relief Pitcher Reed Garrett leads the team with seven wins. Luis Severino leads the Mets with an ERA of 3.29. The team will also be without Closer Edwin Diaz for another as week he was suspended for a foreign substance. He was tossed before coming into the game on Sunday night against the Chicago Cubs.

New York Team’s Upcoming Schedule

The New York Mets have an off-day today before hosting the Houston Astros for a three-game series beginning on Friday. The Yankees look to get back on track with a four-game set that begins tonight against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Even with a rough stretch, the New York Yankees(52-30) still have the third-best record in Major League Baseball. Center Fielder Aaron Judge is on a torrid pace this season and that continued over two games in Queens. He went 4-of-5 in the series including a grand slam on Tuesday night. He also hit a two-run home run last night for his team’s only two runs of the game.

Both of these ballclubs have huge payrolls, and what comes along with that are outsized expectations. The New York media also adds fuel to the fire as each game is viewed as a referendum on the team one way or another. The New York Mets visit the Yankees for a two-game series on July 23 and 24. The Yankees will look to exact revenge on their rivals after what was an embarrassing trip into hostile territory.
