The New York Mets entered 2025 with lofty expectations. It was widely expected their offense would be the one carrying the load. That has not been the case. New York’s starting rotation is making history this year. The Mets have four starters this year with an ERA under 3.00. The last time New York has accomplished that through 65 games was in 1985.
That season, Dwight Gooden, Ron Darling, Sid Fernandez, and Ed Lynch were members of the rotation. The Mets lead the league with a 2.85 ERA from their starting pitchers in 2025. The four pitchers on this year’s staff with sub-3.00 ERAs are Kodai Senga(1.59), Clay Holmes(2.95), Griffin Canning(2.90), and David Peterson(2.80). Will the pitching staff of the New York Mets be able to keep it up?
Gary Cohen and SNY with cool stat: noting that Holmes' ERA dipped to 2.96 tonight, giving Mets' four starters with ERA under 3.00 – last time Mets could say that through 65 games was 1985 – Gooden, Darling, Sid, and Ed Lynch.

New York has gotten off to a strong start this year. They have the best record in the National League at 41-24. Their offense has been middling. They are 16th in batting average, ninth in home runs, and 10th in runs scored. First Baseman Pete Alonso is leading the league in RBI and fifth in OPS. Free agent Juan Soto has been a massive disappointment. New York’s offense must pick it up for the team to reach its full potential.
New York’s pitching staff has been the talk of the league. They lead the league in ERA by a wide margin, are fourth in opposing batting average, and fifth in strikeouts. Holmes is fifth in the league in wins. Senga is third in ERA. The Mets should be getting Starting Pitchers Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas back soon. Neither have made their season debut. That will make their staff even stronger.
The New York Mets go for the series sweep this afternoon on the road against the Colorado Rockies. They send Tylor Megill to the mound. He is the only member of New York’s starting rotation with an ERA above 3.00. If the Mets can continue pitching this well, 2025 may be a season for the history books.
