New York Mets Roster Depth Stretched To The Limit As Another Infielder Heads For 10-Day IL

The New York Mets endured a horrendous April, putting them in dire straits early in the 2026 campaign. While the Mets are performing well below their potential, they are also hampered by injuries. Juan Soto spent a stint on the IL last month, and Francisco Lindor is sidelined indefinitely with a calf injury.

On Sunday, the New York Mets copped another body blow after placing Ronny Mauricio on the IL. He fractured his thumb in a headfirst slide during the 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels the previous day. The Mets have yet to determine the extent of the injury. But they expect Mauricio to need about two months to complete his recovery.

“He’s going to get a CT scan [Monday], but regardless of the severity, what they’re saying is it is going to be six to eight weeks,” Mets skipper Carlos Mendoza told reporters on Sunday ahead of the series finale against the Angels.

The Mets optioned Ronny Mauricio to Triple-A Syracuse last month. They recalled him to the team on April 23 following the injury to Francisco Lindor. His injury stretches their infield depth to the limit, with Jorge Polanco still on the 10-day IL.

Mets Call Up Vidal Brujan To Replace Ronny Mauricio

After moving Ronny Mauricio to the IL on Sunday, the New York Mets called up Vidal Brujan from the minors to occupy the vacant spot on the MLB roster. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza stated the 28-year-old will share the shortstop role with Bo Bichette.

“It will be matchup-based when I want to get lefties in there and when I want righties and play some of the other guys around the field,” Mendoza said. “But when it’s a tough matchup right-on-right, I also want to get in some of the lefties, [including] Brujan. So, fluid day-to-day, and we’ll go from there.”

Bichette played as a shortstop for almost his entire MLB career before moving to third base after joining the Mets this past offseason. On the other hand, Brujan is adept in both middle infield positions, but he can also do a job in the outfield.
