The New York Mets had a great weekend both on the diamond and in the stands. The team drew a record 87,291 fans to Citi Field over the weekend between Saturday & Sunday against the Philadelphia Phillies. It is the largest non-Subway Series crowd on back-to-back games in the history of regular season baseball at Citi Field. New York drew 44, 152 in Saturday’s 6-3 victory and 43,139 patrons in last night’s 2-1 victory. Will the New York Mets be able to bring a home playoff game to Citi Field this year?

New York Mets In Great Playoff Position

New York Mets Center Fielder Brandon Nimmo implored the fans to support the ballclub over their final homestand of the 2024 regular season: “We’re ready to go. This is going to be playoff baseball. Mets fans, we need you guys to fill this place up. This place needs to be rocking…We need your help. We need everybody to get out here.” It’s safe to say the fans responded to Nimmo’s plea as the team took three of four games from the Phillies and set an attendance record.

New York(87-69) enters the final week of the 2024 regular season in the second National League Wild Card spot. They have the same record as the Arizona Diamondbacks, but occupy the second wild card spot due to a head-to-head tiebreaker. The New York Mets visit the Atlanta Braves for a critical three-game series beginning tomorrow. New York has a 76% chance to make the MLB Playoffs according to FanGraphs. The Mets finish off their regular season by visiting the Milwaukee Brewers. New York is vying for their second playoff appearance in the last three years.

Citi Field Has Been Kind To New York

The New York Mets have been very successful this season at Citi Field. They finished the regular season with a 46-35 home record. Their 46 home wins are fourth-most in the league. Granted, some of the teams they are competing with still have another series or two at home this regular season. All things considered, it has been an average year for the New York Mets attendance-wise. They are 17th in the league with an average of 28,757 fans per home game.

If New York ends up making the playoffs this year, they will be forced to go on the road for the wild card round. Only if New York advances into the NLDS will they be able to play a playoff game in front of their home fans. It has been a whirlwind season for the New York Mets as they have been one of the league’s best teams over the last few months. The fans helped the team have success this weekend, but New York will have to clinch a playoff berth on the road this week. The fans will be cheering on the team from across the country though.
