New York Yankees Announce Abrupt Pitching Change

The New York Yankees closed a 4-3 loss to the San Diego Padres on Sunday and then made a roster move that sent one of their most closely watched young pitchers back to the minors.

After the game, the club announced that right-hander Elmer Rodriguez had been optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The timing was abrupt only in the sense that it came on a travel day after a series defeat, not because the decision itself was a surprise to anyone who had watched his latest stretch in the majors.

Rodriguez, 22, has spent 2026 bouncing between the Bronx and Pennsylvania. He made his big-league debut earlier this year and was recalled most recently on August 26. That return produced his best start of the season: six innings against Houston in which he allowed three earned runs, struck out six, and walked two. Five days later in Anaheim, the outing collapsed.

He lasted 3.2 innings against the Angels, giving up four earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five. Across six major-league starts, he is 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA. The stuff remains obvious. The command and consistency have not.

The Yankees do not have to announce a corresponding move until Tuesday, when they open a series against Colorado. Several pitchers and position players are inching closer to activation.

Aaron Judge is scheduled to face live pitching on the off day. Ryan Weathers has resumed throwing after a forearm issue. Clarke Schmidt continues a rehab program that should put him in position to pitch in September.

Those returns, more than any single outing by Rodriguez, explain why a 22-year-old with remaining options is the one heading back to Scranton.

For Rodriguez the assignment is familiar. He has already been optioned and recalled multiple times this season. Each trip has been framed as a chance to refine the same traits that made him a top prospect: a mid-to-upper-90s sinker, a breaking ball that can miss bats, and the need to throw more strikes when hitters stop chasing.

The organization still views him as part of the future rotation. The present rotation, battered by injuries and looking for innings that do not leak runs, simply cannot wait for him to find that consistency in real time.

Monday is an off day. Tuesday the Yankees will take the field with a slightly different pitching staff and another young arm back in Triple-A, working on the same problems that sent him there.

Rodriguez’s next start will come against Rochester or whoever the RailRiders draw. The Yankees’ next start will come against the Rockies, with the September roster still taking shape.
