New York Yankees Announce Brutal Injury Update

The New York Yankees have announced that they have moved center fielder Trent Grisham to the 10-day injured list Saturday with a right hamstring strain, the same issue that already cost him three weeks earlier this season.

In the corresponding roster move, the club recalled outfielder Jasson Domínguez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The latest setback occurred Friday night at Petco Park, where Grisham was facing his former San Diego Padres team. After drawing a walk to lead off the second inning, he was thrown out trying to steal second and later felt the hamstring tighten.

One inning later, he could not close on Xander Bogaerts’ two-out flare into shallow center, a ball that dropped for an RBI single. Grisham was removed before the bottom of the third as the Yankees went on to lose 3-2 in ten innings.

Manager Aaron Boone said imaging would follow and that an injured-list stint was possible. Grisham himself called the timing disappointing but added that such risks come with the job.

This is the second time the 29-year-old has strained the same hamstring in 2026. He first went on the injured list June 13 after sliding into second base in Toronto and returned July 3. Since then he has insisted the muscle felt fine, yet his range and first-step quickness have visibly diminished.

A two-time Gold Glove winner, Grisham entered the weekend ranked near the bottom of qualified center fielders in both defensive runs saved and outs above average.

At the plate, he is hitting .211 with 18 home runs and 59 RBIs in 121 games, a drop from the unexpected 34-homer season that prompted him to accept New York’s $22 million qualifying offer last winter.

The absence eases an impending outfield logjam. Aaron Judge is nearing a return from a rib injury, which would have forced the Yankees to choose among Grisham, rookie Spencer Jones, and others for everyday playing time.

Jones, a San Diego-area native, shifted from right field to center after Grisham left Friday’s game and now has a clearer path to regular at-bats.

Domínguez, optioned in early August after the club acquired Heliot Ramos, gets another chance to show whether his switch-hitting bat and athleticism can stick in the majors during the stretch run.

How long Grisham remains sidelined will depend on the imaging results. A modest strain could keep him out only the minimum ten days, but hamstring injuries often linger, especially when they recur.

For a Yankees team still chasing a postseason berth, the latest development adds another layer of uncertainty to an already reshuffled outfield as September begins.
