The New York Yankees have been struggling as of late and one of the team’s biggest needs was at the hot corner, but they pulled a trigger and made a trade. It is being reported that they have traded with the Colorado Rockies to acquire third baseman Ryan McMahon in exchange for a pair of prospects. Let’s take a deeper dive into this trade and discuss what it means for the Bronx Bombers going forward.
MLB’s Mark Feinsand is reporting that the New York Yankees have traded with the Colorado Rockies for third baseman Ryan McMahon in exchange for the Yankees’ number 8 prospect Griffin Herrnig and 21st-ranked prospect Josh Grosz. McMahon fills a hole the team has and takes them out of the Eugenio Suarez sweepstakes. McMahon is in the fourth year of a six-year, $70 million contract, meaning he will be under contract through 2027.
One thing this move does is significantly improve the defense at third base, as McMahon has a .978 fielding percentage while the league average is just .961. This defensive-minded third baseman move is good with the New York Yankees as they have gotten a lot of offense through the rest of the lineup. On the season, McMahon has a .217/.314/.403 slash line with 16 home runs, 35 RBI, and 42 runs scored. This also adds another left-handed bat in their lineup, which should compliment him playing at Yankee Stadium.
The one downside to this move is that the New York Yankees added another high-strikeout hitter to their team as McMahon’s 127 strikeouts this season is second to only Detroit Tigers’ Riley Greene’s 136. However, this is a significant improvement and gives the team an idea of who will be at the hot corner for the next few years. New York will bank on him getting closer to his 2024 All-Star self, but it will be interesting to see how the 30-year-old does in the Bronx.
