The New York Yankees are in a tight division race with the Toronto Blue Jays, and every game counts. Tonight, the Boston Red Sox were able to take down Toronto by a final score of 2-1. For New York, they were unable to capitalize on their loss and remain two games back of First Place.
The Yankees’ offense has been one of the best in all of baseball in 2025, but they tend to have their tough days. Tonight was a slow night for New York, as they were only able to muster one run through eight innings, which came on an RBI double from Austin Wells. Shane Smith shut the Yankees down tonight, going five innings, allowing just one earned run, four walks, and eight strikeouts. Smith has been the White Sox’s best pitcher this year, posting a 3.98 ERA with 129 strikeouts.
Luis Gil went six innings, but his one mistake was costly for the Yankees. New York did get close to tying the game in the bottom of the eighth, with Ben Rice hitting a single to centerfield, and pinch running for by Jose Caballero. Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a bullet single down the left field line, but Caballero not stealing second base during Giancarlo Stanton’s at-bat caused him to be held up at third. Amed Rosario has been great for the Yankees so far, but he put together an atrocious at-bat with the tying run just 90 feet away.
In the 9th inning, the Yankees came alive. Anthony Volpe and Austin Wells led things off with singles, giving New York runners on first and second with nobody out. Trent Grisham then grounded into a double play, leaving them with just one out to play. Aaron Judge was intentionally walked, leaving it all on Cody Bellinger. He ended up drawing a walk on a wild pitch, allowing Anthony Volpe to score from third. Just when you thought they were out, they pulled you back in.
With the Blue Jays’ loss tonight, New York sits just ONE Game behind Toronto in the AL East, and a first-round bye is still in play for the Bronx Bombers. All pressure is now on Toronto, as they’ll have to play their best baseball and can’t afford to make any mistakes. With just five games remaining, the Yankees could go 5-0, while the Blue Jays could go 3-2.It’s incredible how much fight they’re showing this late in the season, and they’re playing with a different charisma than they have in the past.
