Since September 5th of last season, Nick Ahmed has officially been a part of four different National League West teams. On Sunday, the veteran shortstop signed with the San Diego Padres, leaving the Colorado Rockies as the only NL West team he has not played for.
Ahmed, who was released by the Arizona Diamondbacks less than a year ago, had been a mainstay in Arizona’s infield for a decade, earning two Gold Gloves during his tenure. However, with the emergence of younger talent like Geraldo Perdomo at shortstop, Ahmed’s role diminished, leading to his eventual release.
Before the 2024 season, Ahmed signed with the San Francisco Giants, staying with the team until his release on July 7th. Despite being eligible for a National League Championship ring from his time with the Diamondbacks, Ahmed declined the honor when the Giants visited Arizona later that year.
Shortly after leaving the Giants, Ahmed signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he provided a memorable moment by delivering a clutch two-run go-ahead homer against his former team, the Giants, in just his second game. Unfortunately, that moment was one of the few highlights during his time with the Dodgers, as he struggled at the plate, going 11-for-48 with no additional RBIs.
Now, the 34-year-old shortstop joins the Padres on a minor league deal as the team makes a final push for the postseason.

With less than one month remaining on the schedule, the Padres sit in the 2nd Wild Card spot and are two games ahead of the Atlanta Braves.
