The Nike Dunk is back with its latest release and the most popular sneaker of 2023 will see yet another collaborative effort from a local streetwear brand. Lapstone & Hammer has worked with the sneaker giant to create the Nike Dunk Low “Philly,’ paying homage to the city of Philadelphia and what makes it so special.

Lapstone & Hammer opened in 2015 as a footwear and clothing retailer in downtown Philadelphia. They were approached by Nike to help create a shoe that embodied the spirit of the city, far beyond just their sports teams and Rocky references. Owner Brian Nadav took the people from Nike on a tour of his city and showed them what set apart the people of Philly from the rest of the country.

Announced not long ago, the Nike Dunk Low “Philly” was born, a unique take on Philadelphia that would surprise even the most cultured locals. The shoes were announced by Phillies second baseman Bryson Stott and the Phillies Phanatic.

The Nike Dunk Low “Philly” features a mix of cracked leather and suede along the upper. The grey coloring around the toe is meant to resemble the concrete and constant industrial growth of the city. The cracked leather covering the Nike Swoosh will wear over time, revealing a softer material underneath. This was inspired by the grit and resilience of Philly natives, who often have a tough-outer shell that needs to be broken through to reveal their true selves.

The green shoelaces and yellow tips resemble the street signs throughout Philadelphia, complete with the coordinates to City Hall along the lace ends. The tongue tag and inner sockliner are done in tie-dye and are meant to represent the murals and artistic expressions throughout the city. It also pays homage to the creative spirit of Philly residents as the word “PHILLY” replaces the usual Nike logo on the heel tab.

Finer details include a city map on the insoles of the shoe, which comes complete with graphics and “easter eggs” that only the most-versed Philadelphia natives would pick up on. The Phanatic even got his own pair and the team store at Citizens Bank Park will carry the shoes prior to their public release.

Where to buy Nike Dunk Low “Philly”

The Nike Dunk Low “Philly” will be available at Lapstone & Hammer and Philadelphia-based retailers, including the Phillies Team Store, on June 1, 2024. The shoes will retail for $135 and will be available in full family sizing. The shoes will see a wider release on June 17 via Nike SNKRS app, giving Philly locals a first-chance at securing a pair for themselves.

Expect this release to be fairly limited in numbers and highly sought-after on the resale market. All in all, this may be a home run in terms of a release and with the thought that went into these shoes, we’re giving them our stamp of approval.
