NL West Rivals Could Link Up in Surprise Trade Pitch

The San Francisco Giants already made a splash on the trade market, landing Rafael Devers to anchor the middle of their lineup. Despite the offensive boost, questions still linger, particularly around the back end of their rotation.

Jeff Passan of ESPN has pointed out that starting pitching ranks as the Giants' most significant remaining vulnerability. He highlighted that both Justin Verlander and Hayden Birdsong have struggled since June 1, posting ERAs of 6.27 and 5.73, respectively.

While the bullpen has demonstrated reliability, it may be concealing deeper issues within the pitching staff. As Passan noted, "Whether the Giants are real or simply a function of the bullpen... remains to be seen."

This sets the stage for the next strategic move to be as crucial as the recent acquisition. One player mentioned by Passan as a potential fit for San Francisco is Merrill Kelly of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

While intradivision trades are rare, Passan highlighted the Giants' new leadership, writing, "If Buster Posey has shown anything in his first season as president of baseball operations, it's a willingness to stomach the sorts of deals that would scare off his peers."

Acquiring Kelly would provide a significant enhancement, bringing in a postseason-experienced pitcher. He has recorded a 2.25 ERA during the Diamondbacks' World Series campaign in 2023. This season, Kelly has made 19 starts, achieving a 7-4 record and a 3.41 ERA over 111 innings pitched.

The Giants sit at 51-43, second in the National League West and securing the third Wild Card position. With their last postseason series win dating back to 2014, the organization faces a tightly contested division and Wild Card race, making it an opportune moment to consider bold moves.

Even at the risk of dealing with a rival team.
