Shohei Ohtani hit his first home run since August but the Los Angeles Dodgers blew a four-run lead and were swept by the Milwaukee Brewers. The Dodgers held a lead in all four games of the National League Championship Series, yet it’s the Brewers who are in the World Series for only the second time in franchise history.
It’s the Brewers’ first NL pennant, as their appearance in the 1982 Fall Classic came as a member of the American League.
Moved up to the leadoff spot following an encouraging stretch of at-bats during workouts and in Game 3, Ohtani provided a jolt with his three-run home run in the second inning. The homer was not only Ohtani’s first since Aug. 18, but it also marked his first extra-base hit of the playoffs.
Ohtani has spent the better part of the past four months playing through right arm and left knee injuries.
Got through three perfect innings before walking the 10th batter faced. That wound up leading to some trouble as William Contreras followed with a ground-rule double for the Brewers’ first hit of the game.
Jake Bauers then added onto his big showing in the series with a ground-rule double of his own that cut the Dodgers’ lead in half.
Glasnow’s second walk in the game sparked another rally for the Brewers. Sal Frelick immediately stole second base and came around to score on David Hamilton’s single that also chased Glasnow from the game with one out in the fourth inning.
A fourth run was charged to Glasnow when Vesia entered with the bases loaded and walked Bauers on four pitches to tie the game.
Milwaukee continued their streak of scoring in the sixth inning when Garrett Mitchell hit a go-ahead home run off Tanner Scott. David Hamilton connected on a solo homer against Edwin Díaz in the ninth for good measure.
The Brewers have now come from behind in six of their seven postseason wins this year. They are the eighth team to trail in every game they won during a best-of-seven and also win the series.
The Dodgers went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left five on base.
They had opportunities late to pull even but Kyle Tucker was stranded after a one-out double in the sixth inning, and Andy Pages was left on third after leading off the seventh with an extra-base hit. Will Smith also was left on base after ending up at third on his double and Brewers error with one out in the eighth inning.
