Nolan McLean Dominates Mets Spring Debut Before WBC

Nolan McLean picked up right where he left off.

After emerging as a late-season spark in 2025 and helping keep the Mets afloat down the stretch, McLean entered 2026 with expectations of fronting the rotation. The offseason acquisition of Freddy Peralta may have shifted the spotlight slightly, but it could ultimately benefit the young right-hander — giving him breathing room and less pressure as he settles into what the Mets hope is his first full season as a cornerstone arm.

On Friday afternoon, McLean made his Spring Training debut and looked every bit the part. The right-hander spun four innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out six. His sinker topped 98 mph, flashing the electric velocity that made him must-watch last season.

“It felt good to go out there and compete against some other jerseys,” McLean said following the outing.

While Spring Training results always come with a grain of salt, the crisp command and overpowering stuff were encouraging signs for a pitcher expected to take another step forward.

The Mets’ projected rotation features Peralta, Clay Holmes — the former reliever turned starter — and David Peterson, along with hopeful returns from Kodai Senga and Sean Manaea. But manager Carlos Mendoza has made it clear that McLean will play a significant role.

“He’s built different,” Mendoza said. “I don’t think any moment is too big for him, or any stage.”

Next up for McLean is the World Baseball Classic, which begins March 6. The young right-hander has earned a role with Team USA, adding another high-profile opportunity before Opening Day.

“I don’t have a ton of expectations on what I’m going to go out there and do,” McLean said. “But I’m just super excited to go out there and do it.”
