The 2025 MLB Draft is flying. Picks, reactions, and so much more got underway on Sunday evening. For the Oklahoma Sooners, their ace from this past season is headed to professional baseball. Kyson Witherspoon heard his name called in round one.
One of the Witherspoon brothers is headed to Boston. Kyson will get an opportunity to work his way to the MLB in the Red Sox's system.
Witherspoon has a ton of upside, and this was great value for the Sox. Witherspoon was often mocked in the top ten picks, and he slipped down just a bit to the fifteenth overall selection.
Red Sox have taken RHP Kyson Witherspoon with the 15th overall pick, per @JoeDoyleMiLB.

He falls to the Red Sox after being #10 on MLB Pipeline’s big board.
Another year of the Red Sox landing someone who wasn’t expected to be there…

Witherspoon has swing-and-miss stuff, starting with a mid-90s fastball that peaks at 99 mph and stands out more for its power than its modest life. His mid-80s slider can touch 91 mph while featuring both horizontal action and depth, and he'll turn it into an upper-80s cutter that he uses just as often. He's showing more consistency with his low-80s downer curveball, giving him another plus offering, while his upper-80s changeup is a work in progress that gets too firm but will show interesting fade at times. -- MLB.com
Heading to Boston can be a tall task. The Red Sox organization is one of the most well-known, illustrious brands in all of baseball. Now, the young pitcher will do his best to fast track his road to the majors in their system.
I discussed Witherspoon's growth and impact on the Sooners' team with Justin Churchill, who covers Oklahoma consistently at A to Z.
Skip Johnson and the Oklahoma Sooners baseball team didn't quite have the end to the season they had hoped for after starting it as one of the few undefeated teams in the country early on. However, it wasn't by any means a failure of a season, despite not making it far in the College World Series. If you asked Johnson if he thinks it's a failure of a season, I'm sure he would say no, and point directly to all the players he had the privilege to coach this season and develop. One of those guys is Kyson, who became a superstar in his own right. Witherspoon really started to become the heartbeat of the team and pitching staff, and the Sooners relied on him heavily to get them out of jams, and even more so, to win ball games. Without him in 2026, their pitching staff will certainly be missing some juice, but the Chicago White Sox are gaining some after taking him No. 15 overall. Witherspoon could easily be at the show in the next two years, or even less time than that, if all goes well. Then, the White Sox would have a ton of new fans in the good ole Sooner faithful. -- Justin Churchill, A to Z Sports
