One-time All-Star Edgardo Alfonzo hired as manager of Staten Island Ferry Hawks

Alfonzo last played in the majors in 2006, and from 2014 to 2019, the now 48-year-old coached with the Brooklyn Cyclones -- the High-A affiliate of the Mets. The Venezuelan served as the manager of the club from 2017 to 2019, helping the team capture the New York-Penn League Championship in his final season.

Alfonzo's third MLB season in 1997 was his breakout year, as he collected 10 home runs, 72 RBIs, 84 runs scored, a career-high 11 stolen bases and finished with a .315/.391/.432 slash line across 599 plate appearances in 151 games. 1997 was also the first of six seasons that saw Alfonzo accomplish the rare feat of recording more walks than strikeouts, as he drew 63 bases on balls against just 56 strikeouts.

In 1999, Alfonzo set career-highs in home runs (27), RBIs (108), hits (191), runs scored (123) and doubles (41), finished eighth in the NL MVP voting and earned his only Silver Slugger award of his career. Alfonzo's 2000 season was arguably his best, as he produced 25 home runs, 94 RBIs, and set career-highs in walks (95), batting average (.324), on-base percentage (.425), slugging percentage (.542) and on-base plus slugging percentage (.967), while making his only All-Star team.

Alfonzo helped the Mets advance to the World Series in 2000, where they lost to the New York Yankees in five games.

The Ferry Hawks play in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball (ALPB) and will be in their second season of existence in 2022.
