Orioles Announce Move After Samuel Basallo News

The Baltimore Orioles have been without their catching duo over the past couple games. Both Samuel Basallo and Adley Rutschman are dealing with injuries. Basallo has been kept out of the lineup with left wrist discomfort while Rutschman nurses left hamstring tightness.

Fortunately for the Orioles, it appears Basallo will not be headed to the 10-day injured list. Manager Craig Albernaz spoke with reporters pregame and clarified that despite being absent from the lineup, Basallo will be available off the bench.

He also revealed that Basallo has continued baseball activities and the team's decision to keep him on the bench is about "doing what's best" for him over the course of a long 162-game season (h/t Jake Rill of MLB.com).

Despite the positive update, the catching situation remains murky for the Orioles. As a result, the team announced a move to bolster depth via the minor league transaction log.

With Basallo and Rutschman sidelined, catcher Sam Huff has stepped in behind the plate, but having more options never hurts. Baltimore added veteran catcher Chadwick Tromp to the organization, immediately optioning him to Triple-A Norfolk.

Tromp is familiar with the Orioles, having played six games for Baltimore during the 2025 season. He appeared in 12 games for the Atlanta Braves this year before being designated for assignment in early May, leading to his deal with Baltimore.

Tromp will likely never provide much value at the plate. He has posted a .218 batting average, .225 on-base percentage, .596 OPS, six home runs and 26 RBIs over 79 career games.

It is also unlikely he sees time with the big league club, but given the injury history of both Rutschman and Basallo, having insurance in the system is never a bad idea.
