Few things seem to come to mind as remedies for a young, contending team that gets off to a bad start.
Sitting at 13-23, the Baltimore Orioles are off to their worst 36-game start to a season since 2019, when they finished 54-108, their fourth most losses in franchise history.
The offense looks lifeless, and the team has seemed to find cleverer ways to lose each night.
That was no different in the Orioles' latest loss Thursday, when the Twins finished off a sweep with a 5-2 win.
First baseman Ryan Mountcastle received some 'Captain Obvious' monikers with a postgame remark where he said that the team has "got to start winning some games here soon."
On Thursday, Dean Kremer threw seven dominant innings with two runs allowed, for his second straight quality start. Kremer exited with a 2-2 tie game, which should've been more than enough to set up the Orioles for a win to avoid the sweep.
Instead, Yennier Cano walked two batters, missing wildly on many pitches, and was yanked in favor of Gregory Soto, who promptly gave up a two-run double to Brooks Lee and an RBI single to Ty France.
When it rains, it pours in Baltimore, and for a variety of reasons, Orioles fans want change.
Speaking of that 2019 season, manager Brandon Hyde was in the fold for that 54-108 finish, and has remained with the Orioles. Hyde is the main person that Orioles fans want gone, with one X user posting: "Brandon Hyde was originally hired to lose 100+ games multiple times. Can't say he isn't good at his job, I guess?"
Another commented, "Pirates' Derek Shelton firing just turned up temperature on Brandon Hyde's hot seat."
You have to be really fed up to mention Hyde in the same sentence as Shelton, who was fired as a result of a difficult start to the lowly Pirates' season.
On the bright side, former top prospect Jackson Holliday has turned it around, slashing .316/.350/.632 in May, much thanks to his dad Matt, also an MLB veteran, who suggested he adjust his hands position in his swing.
However, many fans questioned why that wasn't something Orioles hitting coaches were able to identify, with those suggestions being a main responsibility.
One user commented: "This raises a tough question: If {hitting coach} Cody Asche couldn’t help Jackson with his swing, who else is slipping through the cracks? With the #Orioles offense near the bottom of the league, it’s time to take a harder look at the hitting coach and staff."
The Orioles have the personnel to contend, as they have for the last two seasons, but their abysmal start to the 2025 season has left many questioning what needs to change.
