Orioles' Gunnar Henderson and Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll win 2023 MLB Rookies of the Year

The results are in, and even though they seemed obvious going into it, both Gunnar Henderson of the Baltimore Orioles and Corbin Carroll of the Arizona Diamondbacks have made history for their respective clubs.

Henderson, representing the American League, and Carroll, representing the National League, were named the 2023 Jackie Robinson Rookies of the Year. The award was given to both players, unanimously, marking the first time since 2017 (Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger) that unanimous winners were named.

Carroll is the first D-backs player ever to win the award.

To this point, the Diamondbacks (founded in 1998) were the only club remaining in MLB without a Rookie of the Year.

A 23-year-old left fielder, Carroll batted .285 with 25 home runs and 76 RBI. His OPS (on-base plus slugging) of .868 was the 14th best in MLB. He notched 54 stolen bases, which was third-best behind just Atlanta Braves' Ronald Acuna Jr. and Oakland Athletics' Esteury Ruiz. His WAR (wins above replacement) was 5.4.

Henderson, 22, is the first O's player since Gregg Olson in 1989 to win Rookie of the Year.

A third baseman and shortstop, he hit .255 with an OBP (on-base percentage) of .325 and an OPS of .814. His 28 home runs led all rookies and his extra-base hits (66) were tied for 11th in the AL.

His WAR of 6.3 was also top 10 in baseball alongside players such as Braves' Matt Olson, Texas Rangers' Corey Seager and Marcus Semien and Los Angeles Dodgers' Freddie Freeman.
