The San Diego Padres punched their ticket to the postseason on Monday night in walk-off fashion with a 5–4 win against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Padres celebrated postgame without the team’s young star Fernando Tatis Jr., who went on to miss the remaining two games of the three-game series at Petco Park. Tatis has helped lead San Diego to the postseason in back-to-back seasons through his contributions in the batter’s box and elite defense. He has already earned a Gold Glove Award for his defensive abilities in right field after transitioning to the outfield in 2023.
The 26-year-old earned his third All-Star selection this year and although he has not been an NL MVP candidate like he was during the start of his career, he continues to be an irreplaceable part of manager Mike Shildt’s group.
Tatis has missed the last three games due to sickness, raising concerns over his availability with the postseason approaching quickly. Shildt had noted that Tatis had continued to make progress, yet the right fielder was not seen at the ballpark or available off the bench the entire series against the Brewers.
After Wednesday’s loss to Milwaukee, the Padres announced via Shildt news on Tatis’ return date and his recovery from the illness. The Padres skipper said, “Tatis is definitely feeling better. Today was to make sure it was behind him and not be in there. Just going to continue to rest and take the day off tomorrow so he’s ready to go on Friday.”

With the Padres not playing tomorrow, Shildt anticipates that Tatis’ return to the lineup card will come on Friday with San Diego opening up their final series of the regular season against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
This is positive news for Tatis and the Padres, as his availability will now be huge after Shildt also revealed that Ramon Laureano would be missing at least the opening round of the MLB playoffs with a fractured right index finger. It’s also encouraging that Tatis will have three games to find his rhythm before the postseason begins. He’s been locked in at the plate this September, batting .288 with an .839 OPS and five home runs over 18 games.
