The San Diego Padres have been one of the National League’s most consistent teams this season, staying in step with the Los Angeles Dodgers in a heated NL West race. San Diego briefly jumped ahead last week, but now sits two games back with a 75-59 record and 28 games left on the schedule.

The Padres have relied on strong contributions from Manny Machado, Gavin Sheets, Fernando Tatis Jr., and a good pitching staff to keep their division hopes alive. However, their push took a blow on Friday when they lost one of their most experienced players to injury, forcing the team to make a roster adjustment as the playoff race intensifies.

Padres Place Xander Bogaerts on IL

On Friday, the Padres announced on X that they placed shortstop Xander Bogaerts on the 10-day injured list with a non-displaced fracture in his left foot, recalling infielder Mason McCoy from Triple-A El Paso to fill the roster spot.

“We have placed SS Xander Bogaerts on the 10-day IL with a non-displaced fracture in his left foot and recalled INF Mason McCoy from Triple-A El Paso,” the team wrote.

Bogaerts, a four-time All-Star and six-time Silver Slugger, remains a cornerstone of San Diego’s infield and lineup. In 131 games this season, he has a .262 batting average with 124 hits, 10 home runs, 49 RBIs, 60 runs scored, and a .717 OPS, and his veteran presence will be missed, even for a short period of time.

Over his 13-year MLB career with the Boston Red Sox and Padres, Bogaerts has compiled a .287 batting average, 1,817 hits, 196 homers, 834 RBIs and 945 runs scored, highlighted by two World Series championships with Boston in 2013 and 2018. His absence leaves a major void in San Diego’s middle infield and run production.

McCoy, who has appeared in 29 career MLB games, steps in as the immediate replacement. While not known for his bat — he hit .204 in limited action last year — the 29-year-old provides defensive stability across multiple infield positions, giving the Padres a stopgap solution until Bogaerts returns.

Padres Chasing Dodgers for NL West Top Spot

San Diego now turns its focus to a road series against the Minnesota Twins after dropping a set to the Seattle Mariners earlier this week. With the fifth-best record in the National League, the Padres are in a strong position to secure a playoff berth, but they remain under pressure to keep pace with the Dodgers in the division.

Bogaerts’ absence increases the load on Machado, Tatis Jr., and Sheets, all of whom will be asked to shoulder more responsibility offensively and defensively.
