Padres Dominate Cubs In 8-0 Shutout

The San Diego Padres opened their postseason with a statement, dominating the Chicago Cubs 8-0 in Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series on Tuesday night.

King Shuts Down Chicago

Michael King delivered one of the biggest performances of the night, allowing just one hit over seven scoreless innings while striking out eight. King carried a no-hitter into the seventh before Nico Hoerner broke it up with an infield single.

Yuki Matsui and Joe Musgrove finished the game, completing a three-hit shutout. Musgrove’s appearance was especially notable as it marked his first major league outing since the 2024 postseason after recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Padres’ Stars Come Through

San Diego’s offense wasted no time getting going. Fernando Tatis Jr. launched a leadoff home run in the first inning, and Manny Machado followed with a solo shot to give the Padres an early 2-0 advantage.

Machado added an RBI double in the third, while Xander Bogaerts hit a solo homer in the fourth. The Padres then broke the game open in the fifth when Jackson Merrill delivered a two-run single, followed by another run on a Cubs passed ball.

Tatis finished with two hits and scored three runs, while Machado, Merrill, Bogaerts and Ty France also had two hits apiece.

San Diego Takes Control

The Padres added another run in the seventh after Tatis reached, stole second and eventually scored on a throwing error.

After being eliminated by Chicago in last year’s Wild Card Series, San Diego now has a 1-0 lead in this year’s best-of-three matchup. Game 2 will take place Wednesday night in San Diego.

The Padres couldn’t have asked for a much better postseason opener: dominant pitching, power from their biggest stars and an eight-run offensive performance put them one win away from advancing.
