Padres get bad injury news on Xander Bogaerts

One of the highest-paid players on the San Diego Padres is set to miss significant time.

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported on Wednesday that Padres infielder Xander Bogaerts has suffered a fractured left shoulder and will be out for an extended period. While Acee notes that Bogaerts has no signs of a labrum tear nor any need for surgery, his bone needs to heal. Bogaerts may be sidelined until late summer as a result.

The four-time All-Star Bogaerts was injured during the fourth inning of Monday’s contest against the Atlanta Braves. He dove for an infield grounder and landed awkwardly on his shoulder as a result.

Bogaerts, who signed an 11-year, $280M contract with San Diego prior to the 2023 campaign, has struggled to hit the ball this season, batting .219 with a .581 OPS through 47 games. But his first season with the Padres last year was relatively strong as Bogaerts hit .285 with 19 home runs, 58 RBIs, and 19 stolen bases.

San Diego made a big change with Bogaerts before the season, but it turns out that decision may have unforeseeably led to his injury here. In the next several months without Bogaerts’ services, the 25-26 Padres could move new trade acquisition Luis Arraez from DH to a full-time infield position (with Donovan Solano and Tyler Wade now in the mix for some greater playing time as well).
