Padres Make Fernando Tatis Decision Before Mariners Game

Fernando Tatis Jr. will sit out his first game of the 2026 season on Wednesday night as the San Diego Padres host the Seattle Mariners at Petco Park on Jackie Robinson Day.

Manager Craig Stammen gave the 27-year-old the night off, making Tatis the last San Diego regular to get a day off out of the starting lineup, according to Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Nick Castellanos will start in right field in his place, Xander Bogaerts moves up to the No. 3 hole in the batting order and Ty France earns another start against his former team.

It should be nothing to worry about for fans, as the player has been producing offensively, hitting .350 over his last five games with seven hits, three RBI, two walks and a stolen base. If anything, the timing of giving him an off day is questionable when his recent numbers suggest he was beginning to find his footing after a slow start to the season. His recent production comes on the heels of two starts at second base earlier this month.

The underlying numbers point toward more production ahead. Tatis ranks in the top one percent in hard hit percentage at 72.5 percent and in the top two percent for average exit velo at 95.2 percent, according to Baseball Savant.

The Padres enter Wednesday having won six consecutive games and nine in their last 10, improving to 11-6 on the season. San Diego's pitching staff has been the driving force during the surge, most recently when Michael King and relievers Adrian Morejon, Jason Adam and Mason Miller combined to hold Seattle to one run in Tuesday's 4-1 series opener.

Right-hander Randy Vasquez takes the mound on Wednesday, carrying a 1.02 ERA through his first three starts of the season, in a matchup against Seattle’s Emerson Hancock. Hancock has also had a strong start to his 2026 campaign with three straight outings with five strikeouts or more. The Mariners will look to even the series, having lost four straight since their winning streak was snapped in Tuesday’s series opener.

With Tatis hitting his stride and the Padres rolling as a team, Wednesday’s rest day looks less like a reaction to a struggle or injury and more like Stammen investing in the long game. If San Diego can keep Tatis fresh and productive over the next five months, the Padres figure to be a dangerous team come October.
