The San Diego Padres recalled catcher Luis Campusano from Triple-A El Paso ahead of their final game before the All-Star break against the Philadelphia Phillies.

In a corresponding move, they placed Gavin Sheets on the paternity list.

The move comes two days after Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Campusano may join the team soon.

"Indications from within the organization continue to point to catcher Luis Campusano being called up from Triple-A soon, though it might not happen until after the All-Star break," Acee said.

This is Campusano's third stint in MLB this season, however he has only played nine games so far. He he is 0-for-18 with the Friars this season, though has drawn six walks. His performance in the minor leagues this year, however, are a different story.

The 26-year-old has 14 homers and 48 runs batted in through 57 games with the Chihuahuas this season, and has an impressive OPS of 1.014. The Padres will look to Campusano to generate some offense as a catcher, a position which has offered them very little this season.

The Padres are fourth-worst in MLB among catchers when it comes to batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage and wRC+. Additionally, they have the least runs batted in by the position in MLB. The catcher has played in six different MLB seasons for the Padres, posting his best numbers in 2023 and 2024.

Across those two seasons he batted a collective .261 and posted an OPS+ just below 100, which is considered league average. With their catcher situation sorted for the final game before the All-Star break, the Padres now need to decide who will handle left field, as Sheets has played there in both games during this series.

Left field has also been a major concern for the Padres, and they may look for an upgrade there ahead of the trade deadline in order to move Sheets back to DH.

The Padres retook the final Wild Card spot with their win on Saturday, and are looking to finish the first half of the season strong with a three-game sweep over the Phillies, who they knocked off of top spot in the NL East with yesterday's win. The final game begins on Sunday at 1:10 p.m.
