An 11-year-old collector and his family from Los Angeles are likely smiling this morning.

After all, a baseball card he pulled on Christmas morning just fetched over $1 million at auction via Fanatics Collect.

Last year’s top chase for collectors, the one-of-one Paul Skenes 2024 Topps Chrome Update MLB debut patch autograph card sold for $1.11 million early Friday morning. To put that number in perspective, the card is more than Skenes' 2025 base salary of $875,000.

Per a post from Topps on social media, “Of all active MLB players, only Mike Trout has ever had a card sell for more.”

The Trout card mentioned was the 2009 Bowman Chrome Draft Prospects one-of-one Superfractor Autograph that sold for $3.9 million in August 2020.

Introduced in 2023, the one-of-one MLB Rookie Debut Patch autograph cards were a collaboration between Fanatics - Topps’ parent company - and MLB to mark a player’s rookie debut.

When a player makes his debut, he wears a patch on his jersey to signify the event. After the game, the patch is lifted from the players jersey and later inserted into a one-of-one seral numbered card. It’s later signed by the player before making its way into a pack of Topps Chrome Update Series.

“For a Player there is no bigger moment than the first time they step onto a field for their Major League debut,” MLBPA Executive Director Tony Clark told Forbes in 2023.

“The Debut Patch is one way to capture the timeless nature of this moment and provide fans the opportunity to be part of it by collecting a Player worn item.”

The hype surrounding the Skenes’ debut patch card after the products release last November was real.

The Pittsburgh Pirates offered a bounty for the item, which included two season tickets behind home plate for the next 30 years, a softball game for 30 people at PNC Park with coaching from Pirates alumni, and more!

Skenes’ girlfriend, LSU gymnast and social media influencer Livvy Dunne, also joined in on the fun offering the collector who found the card an opportunity to sit in her suite for a Pirates game this season.

Instead, the 11-year-old and his family, who chose to remain anonymous, decided to put the card up for auction. All of Fanatics Collect’s proceeds from the sale are being donated directly to Los Angeles fire relief funds.

Before Skenes, Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe’s MLB Rookie Debut Patch card established the record when it fetched $150,000. Orioles second baseman Jackson Holliday’s card fetched $198,000 in the same auction as Skenes’ card.
