Boston Red Sox prospect Payton Tolle had a difficult assignment for his major league debut.
The 22-year-old pitcher faced off against arguably the best pitcher in the majors, Paul Skenes. The Pirates' ace entered Friday with a deceptive 8-9 record as he led the majors in pitching WAR (6.2) and ERA (2.07).
Tolle proved up to the challenge, mixing his pitches as he outdueled Skenes through the first five innings, allowing just one hit. He was ultimately lifted after allowing a pair of one-out singles in the sixth with both runners coming around to score as reliever Greg Weissert gave up a two-run double to outfielder Tommy Pham in an eventual 4-2 loss for the Red Sox.
Despite the loss, Tolle impressed in his debut. He allowed two runs on three hits and two walks in his 5.1 innings, striking out eight batters. Tolle racked up an impressive 14 whiffs, including nine whiffs on his fastball.
Friday's outing culminates what has been a meteoric rise through the Red Sox system for Tolle. He was a second-round selection in the 2024 MLB Draft and the Red Sox's second-best prospect per MLB.com, lauded for his plus fastball, willingness to pound the strike zone and his competitiveness.
Tolle made his professional debut this year, beginning the season in High-A before rising through the minors. He posted a 3.04 ERA and a 0.993 WHiP over 91.2 innings across three levels, striking out 133 batters with 24 walks.
Friday's outing was not a one-time appearance for Tolle. Red Sox general manager Craig Breslow said that the rookie left-hander has a chance to start down the stretch and stick in the rotation. Tolle showed that he deserves the opportunity as he dazzled in his major league debut.
