Pete Alonso passes Darryl Strawberry for most home runs in New York Mets history

There is a new king when it comes to all-time home runs with the New York Mets. Pete Alonso surpassed Darryl Strawberry on Tuesday night, getting career No. 253 with the franchise. He did so against one of the team’s bitter rivals as well, the Atlanta Braves.

Alonso stepped up to the plate in the third inning against Spencer Strider after doubling in his first at-bat. Strider’s first pitch got too much of the plate, allowing Alonso to send it the opposite way. Just getting over the left-centerfield wall, Citi Field went into a frenzy.

“Pete Alonso stands alone,” Mets play-by-play commentator Gary Cohen said on the call. “A polar bear on his own private iceberg. Pete Alonso, the most prolific home run hitter in New York Mets history.”

Alonso is a homegrown talent of the Mets, being a second-round pick out of Florida back in the 2016 MLB Draft. His time in the Minors was short-lived, making his debut during the 2019 season, playing in 161 games for the New York. An incredible 53 home runs were hit during his Rookie of the Year campaign, showing what kind of power he could possess.

From there, it’s been a consistent dose of home runs every single year. Taking out the shortened 2020 season, Alonso has yet to finish a season under 30 home runs. This one off Strider on Tuesday night was No. 27 for 2025, putting him well on pace to break the same mark.

Whether or not Alonso would even be in New York was a question this offseason. Leaving in free agency was a real possibility before signing a two-year, $54 million contract. However, a player option allows Alonso to once again test the market this winter if desired. You have to imagine plenty of people, inside and outside the organization, want to make sure he stays put moving forward.

The future will be interesting but for now, all focus is on the present. Alonso gets a great moment in front of the hometown fans, making franchise history.

Arguably more importantly, the Mets are desperate to get back to winning ways. Recent weeks have not been kind to the club as the once NL East leaders are now looking up to the Philadelphia Phillies. They are suddenly in an NL Wild Card race with the Cincinnati Reds as well. Getting a win against the Braves would certainly help.
