Pete Crow-Armstrong passes another Chicago Cubs legend

Williams hit 42 homers back in 1970. Hitting homers at Wrigley as a lefty is not always easy with the winds off Lake Michigan. Outside of Kyle Schwarber in 2019, no Cubs lefty has been particularly close to his record before Crow-Armstrong this year. Anthony Rizzo’s career high was 32, a total he reached three times (2014, 2016, and 2017).

Crow-Armstrong has reached peak levels

It’s hard to put into words what Crow-Armstrong has accomplished this season. He still needs to steal three more bases to reach 40-40, but Wednesday he was too busy hitting homers and triples. Either way, the National League MVP race is over.

Even though he struck out in his final at bat in the eighth, his stepping up with the bases loaded in an 8-2 game to a roaring standing ovation was a moment to remember. The “PCA” and “MVP” chants rained down from the stands like it was a tie game in October. These were the ovations Sammy Sosa got in his prime, when it wasn’t about the game situation but all about the player.

Absolutely no disrespect to the World Series heroes like Rizzo, Schwarber, Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, or Willson Contreras, but there weren’t situations quite like this with them. The same could be said for other greats like Aramis Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano, or Derek Lee (even in 2005). Sosa was in a historic home race, and Crow-Armstrong is breaking franchise and MLB records.

It’s a unique and historic situation, and people should revel in it. He does it all.
