Daniel Robert was one of the many right-handed pitchers hoping to make an impression at the Philadelphia Phillies’ spring training camp this year. The 31-year-old was one of the minor leaguers hoping to make the cut to the 40-man roster for Opening Day. However, on Sunday, Robert was literally battling for his life on the mound.

Marcus Hayes of The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Daniel Robert suffered a heart attack immediately after completing his first bullpen session. The relief pitcher clutched his chest and grunted as he staggered off the mound toward home plate before collapsing on the ground. After lying there for about five minutes, he was ushered off by emergency medical staff.

“A Phillies spokesperson confirmed Daniel had another cardiac event on the mound. His implantable cardioverter defibrillator was triggered as he was coming off the mound, but he was stable and alert and was taken to the local hospital to have the device data reviewed,” Hayes stated on Sunday.

Daniel Robert reportedly did not lose consciousness and was able to communicate during the episode. He recovered enough to walk under his own power to the parking lot before getting moved to a local hospital. Robert was released later on Sunday after he was declared out of danger.

“Seeing him walk off was definitely a good sign,” the Phillies rookie said, as per Marcus Hayes of The Inquirer. “He said he felt good during the bullpen and felt good before he left.”

“One of the friendliest guys, super positive, high energy,” Painter added. “He’s a good guy to be around, for sure.”

Incidentally, this was the second time that Robert suffered a heart attack in the Phillies camp. He went down in identical fashion after his final bullpen session for the team in October last year. Daniel Robert re-signed for the Phillies in February, showing his goodwill to the club for taking care of him during his illness.
