Philadelphia Phillies Make Bryce Harper Announcement

The Philadelphia Phillies will send Bryce Harper back to right field for Thursday’s series finale against the Houston Astros after using him exclusively as the designated hitter a night earlier.

The shift appears in the club’s announced batting order, which also returns Kyle Schwarber to the DH spot and slots Alec Bohm at first base, via Underdog MLB.

Harper had occupied the DH role on Wednesday while Schwarber started at first in an 11-7 Phillies win. Manager Don Mattingly’s decision to put Harper in the field again for the afternoon game at Citizens Bank Park restores a more familiar alignment for a club still chasing a strong finish in the National League East.

Zack Wheeler will take the mound opposite Houston’s Cristian Javier.

The revised order has Schwarber leading off as DH, followed by Trea Turner at shortstop and Harper batting third in right. Luis Arraez holds down second base, Bohm is at first, Bryson Stott moves to third, Brandon Marsh is in left, Justin Crawford starts in center, and Rafael Marchán is behind the plate.

The arrangement keeps the Phillies’ most productive bats high in the lineup while giving Harper a chance to contribute with his glove in a park he knows well.

Harper’s defensive returns have been selective this season as the team has managed his workload. Using him as DH on Wednesday offered a day of rest for his legs after a stretch of games, yet the club clearly values his presence in the outfield when the schedule and opponent allow it.

The Astros present a different look than they did a day earlier, and Thomson appears willing to adjust the alignment accordingly rather than lock Harper into one role.

Wheeler’s presence on the mound adds another layer. The veteran right-hander has been one of Philadelphia’s steadiest starters, and a complete defensive unit behind him could prove useful against a Houston lineup that features Yordan Alvarez as the designated hitter and Jeremy Peña leading off.

The Phillies enter the game at 82-64; the Astros sit at 74-72 and remain in the mix in the American League West.

The move itself is modest on paper but reflects the kind of in-series tinkering that becomes common in September. Harper in right field rather than at DH changes how the Phillies deploy their other pieces and gives Thomson flexibility later in the game if he needs to pinch-hit or shift players.

Whether the adjustment pays off will be measured over nine innings, but the lineup card makes the club’s intent clear: Harper is back in the grass for the finale.
