Nick Castellanos joined the Philadelphia Phillies on a five-year, $100 million contract ahead of the 2022 season. The right-handed slugger enjoyed some fine moments with the team, but he also had several unpleasant incidents that never really endeared him to the Phillies fanbase.

As per Matt Gelb of The Athletic, the Philadelphia Phillies asked Nick Castellanos not to report for spring training for the upcoming season. Gelb reported that the Phillies have not allocated space for Castellanos in the team clubhouse at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Florida.

“He is still on the Phillies’ roster, but there is no locker in the clubhouse for him. As the Phillies continue their quest to save a few million dollars, they have told Castellanos not to report to the team’s complex this week, league sources said,” Gelb wrote on Wednesday.

Nick Castellanos is owed $20 million for his final year of their contract. The 33-year-old posted -0.8 bWAR last season despite playing 144 games. He had a .250/.294/.400 slash line with 17 home runs, 72 RBIs, and an 88 OPS+.

Phillies Want to Move Nick Castellanos Before Spring Training

The Philadelphia Phillies may release Nick Castellanos before Opening Day if they cannot find a trade deal for the outfielder . President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski stated that the Phillies are looking to offload the outfielder before the start of spring training.

“That’s our focus prior to the start of spring training,” Dombrowski told reporters this week. “We’re doing everything we can to make a move by that time period. I’ll leave it at that right now.”

Nick Castellanos had a flare-up with the coaching staff in the dugout during a game in May last year. He sat on the bench the following day, ending a streak of 236 consecutive starts, the second-longest in the MLB at the time.
