Phillies Agree To Deal With All-Star Outfielder

The Philadelphia Phillies have added depth to their outfield situation as they have agreed to a one-year deal with Whit Merrifield, per MLB Network.

The Phillies had not officially announced the deal. But an agreement makes sense as insurance if Brandon Marsh is unable to be ready for Opening Day due to his arthroscopic surgery.

Even if Marsh is ready by Opening Day, then Merrifield becomes a great complement to the entire group, which includes Nick Castellanos, Johan Rojas and Jake Cave. Merrifield’s presence would also allow them to use Kyle Schwarber as a full-time designated hitter regardless of Marsh’s availability.

Last season in 145 games with Toronto he slashed .272/.318/.382/.700 with 11 home runs, 67 RBI and 26 stolen bases. He is above-average fielder with three All-Star appearance, including last season with the Blue Jays.

Merrifield had a contract option that would have paid him $18 million in 2024 but it was not triggered, moving him into free agency. Like several quality bats on the market he’s been waiting to get a deal done.

When he’s healthy, he gives you a quality bat along with speed on the basepaths. He’s led the American League in stolen bases three times, including an MLB-leading 45 in 2018 with Kansas City. He broke in with the Royal in 2016 and ended up with the Blue Jays in 2022 via trade.

Merrifield also has position flex at second base, where he played 84 games for the Blue Jays, so he can give current Phillies second baseman Bryson Stott a break.
