Phillies’ Andrew Painter Gets Update on Potential MLB Debut

The Philadelphia Phillies have cycled through a few rotation options this year, but the direction of the pitching staff is still clouded in uncertainty. Aaron Nola was pitching to a 6.16 ERA prior to falling on the IL. Taijuan Walker was moved to the bullpen due to an abysmal showing in May. Jesús Luzardo, who started the year in stellar fashion, has seemingly imploded over the last two starts.

Phillies’ no. 8 prospect Mick Abel, who is pitching in place of the injured Nola, has thrown just two starts on the season to great success. Abel is shaping up to be a valuable arm down the stretch; however, he might not be the only Phillies’ top prospect in the rotation this month.

Philadelphia’s no. 1 prospect, Andrew Painter, is throwing to a 3.90 ERA in the minors this season, raising his career ERA to 2.03. Ranked No. 5 on MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects list, Painter is MLB’s second-highest ranking pitching prospect behind Bubba Chandler. Despite a less-than-ideal performance in the minors this year, Phillies writer Matt Gelb expects him to debut in the very near future. In an article from The Athletic, Gelb wrote this about Painter’s upcoming schedule:

“Andrew Painter’s progressions will become even more important as the Phillies continue to exhaust internal options before the July 31 trade deadline. Painter is expected to pitch twice this week at Triple-A Lehigh Valley — Tuesday and Sunday — meaning he will go on four days’ rest for the first time in his professional career. That is one of the final boxes the Phillies wanted the 22-year-old righty to check before coming to the majors.”

If this is his final test in the minors, we could see Painter in Philly as soon as next week. And with the pitching staff scuffling, Painter's arrival couldn't come at a better time.
