The Philadelphia Phillies recently clinched the NL East, earning back-to-back division titles after another successful season under manager Rob Thomson. The Phillies remain on track to receive a first-round bye as well, bypassing the wild card round. With playoff positioning likely set after Philadelphia took two out of three against the Los Angeles Dodgers earlier this week, the organization will pivot to getting fully healthy ahead of the postseason.
Notably, the team has been shorthanded on the infield with All-Stars Trea Turner and Alec Bohm sidelined since Sept. 7 with injuries. To make matters worse, backup infielder Edmundo Sosa has also been unavailable — severely testing the club’s depth.
Ahead of Friday’s series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Phillies announced exciting news that Alec Bohm would be activated off the injured list as expected, making his return to the lineup.
However, with his reinsertion to the 28-man roster, a corresponding move was required — and the team revealed infielder Rafael Lantigua would be heading back down to Triple-A. The Phillies also announced that recently released outfielder Brewer Hicklen had cleared waivers and would be joining Lantigua in Triple-A.
“Prior to tonight’s game, the Phillies reinstated INF Alec Bohm from the 10-day IL. To make room on the 28-man roster, INF Rafael Lantigua was optioned to Lehigh Valley (AAA). Additionally, OF Brewer Hicklen (DFA’d 9/16) has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Lehigh Valley,” wrote the Phillies on X.

The biggest development of the moves is Bohm’s return to the lineup. The 29-year-old third baseman had been progressing well through his baseball activities, and his left shoulder had responded well. Bohm has had an injury-riddled campaign this year, as this marked his second stint on the IL. Over 111 games, Bohm has posted a .272 batting average, .319 on-base percentage, .703 OPS and nine home runs — disappointing in comparison to his All-Star season in 2024. He will look to gain momentum heading into October upon his return tonight.
Lantigua was added to the roster as a backup and will be heading back down to the minor leagues. He’ll look for another opportunity to make his major league debut, as he did not make an appearance during his time with the big-league club. Hicklen, a 29-year-old outfielder, has primarily been used as a pinch runner — which could be valuable to the Phillies now that he will remain with the organization. However, he has only appeared in ten total games and likely will not be an impact piece.
