The Philadelphia Phillies are entering the MLB offseason with hopes of making the correct additions to the roster in order to get over the hump. The Phillies have won back-to-back NL East division titles, yet they have nothing to show for it as they have been eliminated in the NLDS in both years.
The Phillies have many notable free agents across the board. Designated hitter Kyle Schwarber and starting pitcher Ranger Suarez both declined their qualifying offers on Tuesday, and the team has many holes to fill regardless of if they are able to retain both of those free agents. Catcher J.T. Realmuto and outfielder Max Kepler are also free agents.
As the Phillies weigh their options in MLB free agency, the organization added three minor league players to the 40-man roster on Tuesday. The moves bring their total to 33 players, leaving seven open spots.
“The Phillies have selected the contracts of right-handed pitchers Alex McFarlane and Andrew Painter and outfielder Gabriel Rincones Jr. to the 40-man roster. With these transactions, the club’s 40-man roster currently stands at 33 players,” the team announced on X.

The most exciting addition is right-hander Andrew Painter. The 22-year-old starting pitcher was the Phillies’ first-round pick in the 2021 MLB Draft and was considered a potential call-up during last year’s postseason push, though he ultimately remained in the minors.
Painter struggled at the Triple-A level in 2025, posting a 5.40 ERA across 22 starts, but his ability to consistently reach triple digits with his fastball and command the zone suggests high upside.
Right-hander Alex McFarlane is expected to be a bullpen option for manager Rob Thomson in 2025. Outfielder Gabriel Rincones Jr. could become a versatile left-handed hitter in the outfield, especially if the team loses Kepler in free agency. The 24-year-old prospect played all three outfield positions and posted a .240 batting average, .370 on-base percentage and .799 OPS across 119 games in Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
These three additions give the Phillies internal options to address roster gaps, which is important given the challenges of filling every vacancy through free agency and trades.
