Phillies Announce Trade With Brewers Amid MLB Season

The Philadelphia Phillies are looking for some consistency across their 26-man roster to open the 2026 MLB season. Philadelphia enters Wednesday's slate of games sitting in fourth place with a 6-5 record in the National League East, trailing the New York Mets, Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves.

The Phillies have high expectations this year, looking to win a third straight division title. However, the club has not made it past the divisional round of the MLB playoffs over the past couple of seasons.

Fortunately, Philadelphia still possesses most of its core players and expectations remain high for the team to win their first World Series title since 2008.

On Wednesday, the Phillies agreed to a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers. “The Phillies have acquired outfielder Steward Berroa from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for cash considerations and optioned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. To make room for Berroa on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Yoniel Curet was designated for assignment," the team wrote on X.

While the move is small, it makes sense for Philadelphia. Organizational outfield depth remains a priority, and even at the major-league level the Phillies are still unsure how productive their outfield will be.

Brandon Marsh is the only proven everyday option. Adolis Garcia is a bounce-back candidate after signing a one-year $10 million deal in the winter, and rookie Justin Crawford is still adjusting to the big leagues. Adding another capable outfielder gives the Phillies insurance if any of their current options struggle or if injuries arise.

Berroa, the player acquired from Milwaukee, has appeared in just 30 MLB games and will report to Triple-A, but there is a realistic path for him to reach the majors. He brings excellent speed, stealing seven bases while being caught only twice.

While he has not hit well in limited MLB action, he has performed solidly in Triple-A. Across 180 games at that level, Berroa has posted a .255 batting average, .353 on-base percentage and .726 OPS.

He is not a power threat, but his bat is serviceable, and he plays strong defense across all three outfield spots. He is also a switch hitter, giving him a natural platoon advantage and added versatility.

Because of that versatility and Philadelphia’s uncertain outfield picture, Berroa could easily find himself in the mix if the Phillies need reinforcements later this season.
