The Philadelphia Phillies entered Wednesday’s series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays looking to rebound from Tuesday’s 3-2 loss and secure a series victory. Philadelphia remains one of the National League’s top contenders, and the club appeared firmly in control early at Rogers Centre.
The Phillies jumped out to a 5-0 lead, scoring three runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth. But the Blue Jays responded with four runs of their own to cut the deficit to 7-4.
As the Phillies attempted to hold off Toronto’s rally in the seventh inning, they were dealt an unexpected setback.
Right fielder Adolis Garcia exited the game after appearing to suffer an injury while making a throw home. Garcia was seen holding his arm following the play before being attended to by the Phillies’ training staff. Steward Berroa entered the game as his replacement in right field.
Shortly afterward, the Phillies announced that Garcia had left the game with a ulled muscle in the area of his right shoulder (h/t John Clark of NBC Philadelphia).

The injury is a concerning development for Philadelphia. Although Garcia has endured an uneven first season with the Phillies, he remains an important part of the club’s lineup and defensive structure. Entering Wednesday night, Garcia was batting .197 with seven home runs, 21 RBIs, and 21 runs in 66 games while providing his trademark arm strength and experience in right field.
Garcia remains a proven bat, a former All-Star, Gold Glove winner, and was one of the key contributors to the Texas Rangers’ 2023 World Series championship run.
Philadelphia will now wait for further evaluation before determining the severity of the injury. Given Garcia’s importance to the club’s ambitions, the Phillies will be hoping this is a short-term issue rather than another trip to the injured list.
