The Philadelphia Phillies continue climbing back into contention after another impressive turnaround under interim manager Don Mattingly. Philadelphia’s recent surge has completely reshaped the outlook of its season following a difficult opening month.
The team improved to 24-23 after completing a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates over the weekend. The Phillies opened the season at 9-19 before replacing Rob Thomson with Mattingly on April 28. Since the managerial change, the club has gone 15-4 and quickly reentered the National League playoff picture.
They have also received more consistent bullpen production lately, helping the club close out games far more effectively. This improved late-inning reliability has been a key factor in the team’s 15-4 surge under interim manager Mattingly, complementing stronger starting pitching, elite defense, and a revived offense.
The Phillies carried that momentum into Monday night’s series opener against the Cincinnati Reds at Citizens Bank Park. The game is tied 2-2 entering the bottom of the sixth inning as the club aims to continue building on its recent success with improved late-inning bullpen reliability.
Philadelphia’s improvement under Mattingly has appeared across nearly every area of the roster. The Phillies have posted a 2.91 ERA since the managerial change while also producing one of Major League Baseball’s strongest offensive stretches during that span.

Mattingly later expanded on the comment by pointing toward stronger starting pitching, cleaner defense, and improved hitting throughout the lineup. Philadelphia has committed fewer defensive mistakes while Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber continue producing at a high level offensively during the recent surge.
The turnaround has dramatically changed expectations around the Phillies after the club appeared buried earlier in the season standings. The Phillies have now won five consecutive series and continue building momentum under Mattingly’s leadership as the schedule begins intensifying deeper into May.
