Phillies' Fireball Reliever Heading to Tigers Following Roster Decision

At the start of 2025, right-hander Carlos Hernández was set to suit up for an AL Central Club. The 28-year-old had spent part of the previous five seasons with the Kansas City Royals, but an unimpressive spring training led to him being placed on waivers.

The Philadelphia Phillies claimed him to hold down their final open bullpen spot - one that was only available due to starter Ranger Suárez beginning the year on the injured list. But as Hernández continued to struggle into early June, the Phillies made the same decision as KC previously did.

This time, Hernández was claimed again, and he will be heading back to his old division by joining the Detroit Tigers.

The Tigers currently have the best record in all of baseball (46-27), but their bullpen is only middle of the pack with a 3.76 ERA. They've had to juggle pieces with closer Jason Foley likely out fof the season, and Carlos is the latest band-aid they're attempting to apply.

In 25 appearances with Philly, Hernández pitched to a 5.26 ERA, allowing 32 hits in 25.2 innings. Despite reaching triple digits with his fastball, an overall lack of command led to his dismissal. Yet there is some precedent for Detroit taking another look at him.

After years of struggling and converting from a starter to a reliever, Hernández posted a career-best 3.30 ERA in 30 innings last season. Whether he can recreate that success is in doubt, but pitchers with his velocity often get third, fourth and fifth chances that many others do not.

The Tigers host the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday at 5:40 CDT, while the Phillies are in action tonight at the Miami Marlins at 6:40 EST.
