Phillies Make Alec Bohm Decision After Pre-Break Issue Returns

The Phillies have not started the post All-Star Break stretch off as smoothly as hoped. Not only did the club drop their first game against the Los Angeles Angels, but they also received more bad news on Saturday.

Third Baseman Alec Bohm had been dealing with a nagging rip issue before the break, and it seems that being hit by a pitch in San Diego last Sunday made it one he could no longer ignore.

Before Saturday’s game, the Phillies placed Bohm on the 10-day injured list with a fractured left rib. Weston Wilson was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take his place.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson spoke with media earlier on Saturday, saying that Bohm would be out of the lineup tonight while a doctor reevaluated him. It seems that the results came back with a fracture.

Bohm was hitting .278 with eight home runs, 12 doubles, and 42 RBI on the season. His power numbers have been way down from the past two years - a trend shared by several guys in the Philly lineup - but he had turned around a dismal April and was at least getting on base consistently.

With Bohm sidelined, Edmundo Sosa and Otto Kemp should split the reps at third base. Both are in Saturday’s lineup, with Kemp at third and Sosa playing second in place of the struggling Bryson Stott.
